2016-17 Panini Black Gold Autographs #A-CP Christian Pulisic

The 2016-17 European soccer season saw the first issuance of ultra -premium soccer products and the 2016-17 Panini Black Gold Soccer product, released on January 5, 2017, was one of this inaugural class of ultra-premium products; an ultra-premium-priced product that subsequently evolved into the Panini Obsidian brand after only a one-year run in soccer, which happened to be Christian Pulisic’s rookie year (though it had slightly longer multi-year runs in basketball and football).  At an original suggested retail price of $399.99 for a box that provided only eight total cards per box ($50.00 for each of the eight cards in the box, but a bargain considering the cost of an unopened box is roughly double the original price as of January 2026 with few available), the 2016-17 Panini Black Gold Soccer product provides Christian Pulisic’s rarest pack-based  base rookie card (which has five total parallels, including the base version), a Stars Medallions insert card (which has three total parallels, including the base) and an autographed card (which has four total parallels, including the base).

The 2016-17 Panini Black Gold Soccer product was issued in hobby boxes only, which included two base cards, two serial numbered base cards, two insert cards and two autographed cards in each box.  Thus, we can sum all the serially numbered parallel cards and conclude there are 210 serially numbered parallels for each of the 162 base cards, which totals 34,020 total serially numbered parallels of the base cards.  At the pull rate of two per box there were 17,010 boxes produced, or 2,126 cases.

With cards featuring a player signature in this product pulled at a rate of two per box, the total number of Autographs cards is 34,020.  Amongst the various Autographs cards there are a total of 162 different cards, which means the average number of Autographs cards is 210 per player inclusive of 75 serially numbered Autographs parallels per player (or an average number of 135 base Autographs cards per player).  The challenge for determining the print runs for the base versions of the Autographs cards, however, is it is not known for certain if some Autographs cards are more plentiful than others given no print runs were released of each and the base versions are not serially numbered.  Ultimately, our estimate of the base version of the 2016-17 Panini Black Gold Soccer Autographs #A-CP Christian Pulisic  card is an estimated range with the aforementioned average of 135 on the low end and 175 on the high end, which high end assumes there are more base Autographs cards offered of Christian Pulisic when compared to players like Christiano Ronaldo.  With that assumption, for the high-end of the range we have estimated there could be 250 total Christian Pulisic Autographs cards offered (inclusive of serial numbered parallels) which is 19% above the 210-card average mentioned above.

The 2016-17 Panini Black Gold Soccer Autographs #A-CP Christian Pulisic card features Pulisic in his Borussia Dortmund uniform and is noteworthy for being Christian Pulisic’s first autographed Borussia Dortmund card in any product.  With a January 5, 2017 release date, Panini Black Gold was released only six days after 2016-17 Panini Select featured USMNT autographed cards of Christian Pulisic for the first time (but reserved Pulisic’s first Borussia Dortmund autograph cards for the Panini Black Gold product).

Like with all other 2016-17 Panini Black Gold Soccer cards, the thickness and dark borders of the Autographs cards make these and his other Black Gold cards the most difficult grades of any Christian Pulisic rookie year issue.  As of January 2026, PSA has graded only 15 copies of the base Autographs card (one of which graded PSA 9 and all others lower), five copies of the Bronze /49 (one of which graded PSA 8 and all others lower), and three copies of the Holo Gold /25 (two graded PSA 7, and one PSA 6).  BGS has graded five copies of the base Autographs card (two graded a BGS 9 and all others lower), two copies of the Bronze /49 (one graded BGS 9 and one graded BGS 8.5), and one copy of the Holo Gold /25 (graded BGS 8.5).  CGC has graded only one copy of the base Autographs card (a CGC 8).  SGC has graded seven copies of the base Autographs card and three copies of the Holo Gold /25, and likewise none of these have graded a gem mint.
